Employee Monitoring vs. DLP: The Difference

"Employee monitoring" and "DLP" get used almost interchangeably in vendor marketing, but they answer different questions. Employee monitoring — specifically user activity monitoring (UAM) — answers "what is my team doing?": which apps and websites they use, how much time is spent idle, and general productivity patterns. Data loss prevention answers a narrower, more specific question: "is sensitive data about to leave the organization?"
The practical difference shows up in what triggers an alert. A monitoring tool might flag that an employee spent three hours on social media — useful for a productivity conversation, but not a security incident. A DLP tool flags that a spreadsheet with a customer list was just attached to a personal Gmail message — a very different kind of event that usually needs an immediate response, not a weekly report.
Most vendors sell these as separate products, or as a cheap monitoring tier with DLP locked behind a much more expensive enterprise plan. That split creates a real gap: teams buy a monitoring tool for visibility, assume it also protects against data loss, and only discover the gap after an incident.
